Fall 2021

It all began in the fall of 2021, under the guidance of Dr. Vicki Kelly in the course 'Curriculum Theory and Art Education' (EDUC 868), where I had the incredible opportunity to begin on my journey. This module provided an exploration of art education and its intersection with curriculum theory, while also incorporating the wisdom of indigenous education.

Making of Drums

One of the highlights of this module was the chance to create our own drum, immersing ourselves in the process and craftsmanship involved. Additionally, we had the privilege of participating in a ceremony that awakened the spirit of the drum, deepening our connection to its cultural and spiritual significance.

Metissage Writing

Throughout the course, I engaged in weekly metissage practices, which served as a form of reflection and self-discovery.

These metissage sessions allowed me to explore and reflect on my own experiences and emotions, using various artistic elements to express my thoughts and feelings.

Through writing, I found a powerful outlet for self-expression and a means to explore the complexities of identity and belonging.

Concept of 'Adam in Canada'

It was during these introspective moments that the concept of 'Adam in Canada' began to take shape. This 'branding', centered around my own journey as Adam, a Singaporean finding himself in Canada—a place of new beginnings—became a catalyst for my creative exploration. I compiled poems from my metissage writings and accompanied them with illustrations, giving birth to a powerful fusion of words and visuals.

Adam in Canada Book

Driven by my passion for storytelling and sharing my experiences, I self-published a book entitled "Adam in Canada" through Amazon. This publication became a tangible representation of my journey and provided a platform to share my reflections, insights, and artistic expressions with others.

The module 'Curriculum Theory and Art Education' was a breakthrough moment in the development of 'Adam in Canada'. It provided me with the foundational knowledge and inspiration to plunge into the depths of self-discovery, cultural identity, and the power of art in education. The wisdom gleaned from indigenous education added depth and richness to my exploration, honoring the interconnectedness of knowledge and experience.

Through this module, I gained a deeper understanding of the transformative potential of art education and the significance of incorporating diverse perspectives in the curriculum. The experience of creating my own drum, engaging in metissage, and self-publishing a book enriched my journey, fueling my passion for using art as a medium for personal and societal transformation.
