Spring 2023

In the spring of 2023, I ventured on a transformative journey of self-exploration through art, nurtured by the wisdom of Dr. Ching Chiu Lin, in the course 'Aesthetic Education' (EDUC 848). This module provided a platform for two significant projects: a proposition artwork entitled 'Re:Living Memories' and the Visual Essay  entitled 'Blurring Boundaries'.

Proposition Artwork, Re:Living Memories

Through the "Re:Living Memories" project, I discovered the impact of art in navigating personal narratives, memory, and identity. By merging photography and illustration, I created a layered representation of my experiences, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in the world of 'Adam in Canada'. This project taught me the power of visual storytelling and how overlapping images can evoke a dialogue between the familiar and unfamiliar, the real and imaginary. I learned to celebrate the richness of my cultural identity while acknowledging the challenges and tensions that come with adapting to a new place.

Visual Essay, Blurring Boundaries

In my Visual Essay 'Blurring Boundaries',  I explored the transformative potential of using an authorial avatar in autobiographical comics.

By challenging traditional boundaries between creator and character, I discovered new forms of artistic expression and research-creation.

This approach enabled me to inquire and express the different facets of my personality and experiences beyond the constraints of strict autobiography.

I learned that by blurring the lines between reality and fiction, I could create a character that embodies both my personal journey and the boundless realm of imagination.

This exploration expanded my understanding of artistic practice as a tool for self-reflection and storytelling.

The 'Aesthetic Education' module provided me with invaluable insights into the intersection of art, identity, and self-expression. Through 'Re:Living Memories' and 'Blurring Boundaries', I realized the transformative power of art in connecting with our own stories and the world around us. These project contributed to my living inquiry towards my 'Adam in Canada' project, and taught me the importance of embracing diverse perspectives, celebrating cultural heritage, and challenging traditional boundaries in artistic exploration.
