Summer 2022
During the summer of 2022, under the guidance of Dr. Michael Ling in the course 'Music Education' (EDUC 869), I explored the transformative power of music as a means of expression, connection, and storytelling. This module provided a platform for me to examine in-depth the role of music in addressing complex social issues and shaping personal narratives.
Theme Song for 'Adam in Canada
One of the key highlights of this module was the creation of the theme song for 'Adam in Canada' titled "I am (Adam in Canada)." This theme song was carefully crafted to incorporate unique soundscapes that symbolize Adam's journey. The inclusion of sounds such as the police/ambulance sirens from Vancouver, the calls of the Asian koel (common in Singapore), and the sound of the MRT doors closing (the train system in Singapore) added depth and authenticity to the song, reflecting the duality of Adam's experiences in both Canada and Singapore.
The lyrics of the theme song were written to capture the essence of Adam's experiences living in Vancouver as a Singaporean. Through phrases and verses, I aimed to convey the challenges, triumphs, and self-discovery that Adam encountered while navigating a new cultural landscape. The song became a powerful expression of identity and a means to share Adam's story with others.
Autobiography in 3 Songs
Additionally, as part of the module, I engaged in an exercise called 'Autobiography in 3 Songs'.
This reflection allowed me to explore the influence of my life in Singapore and how it has shaped my identity.
The songs chosen for this exercise, including 'Where I Belong' by Tanya Chua, served as musical reflections on my longing for family, friends, and the familiarity of home in Singapore.
Simultaneously, they explored the journey of finding my place and identity in Vancouver, embracing new experiences and personal growth.
The module Music Education' (EDUC 869) empowered me to harness the evocative power of music to tell stories, reflect on personal experiences, and connect with others. The creation of the theme song and the exploration of an autobiographical musical journey allowed me to deepen the narrative of 'Adam in Canada' and provided a profound musical backdrop to the 'Adam in Canada' project.
