Summer 2023

In the final module, ‘Artists, Society and Arts Education’ (EDUC 849), which happened in the summer of 2023, and benefitting from the expertise of Dr. Micheal Ling once again, I explored the role of an artist and educator in society and the impact I aspire to bring to the community I inhabit.

A Letter to a Young Artist

In the first project, 'A Letter to a Young Artist',  I composed a personal letter offering advice and insights to emerging/inquiring artists. Drawing from my own experiences, reflections, and thoughts, this letter served as a mentorship and educational resource, encapsulating what I believe is important to know, think about, and do as a creative individual in society.

The main takeaway from this letter incorporated the insights gained from my ongoing project 'Adam in Canada', which emphasized embracing the unique ability to inspire and create a positive impact through the arts, fostering light-heartedness, joy, inclusivity, and self-expression, as well as challenging norms and injustices through artistic activism. It also emphasized the importance of personal growth, a supportive artistic community, and staying true to oneself while leaving an indelible mark on the world through the arts.

Bahasa Seni: A Poetic Reflection

In the second project, titled "Bahasa Seni: A Poetic Reflection," I chose to create a poem in Malay Language(Bahasa) my native language, to symbolize the significance of arts and artists in society and the responsibilities of art educators. The poem stands as a heartfelt offering, conveying emotions and thoughts woven into its verses. It is not merely a result but a meaningful expression resulting from the module's influence.

The poem explores the transformative power of art and emphasizes the role of art teachers in nurturing empathy, encouraging bold dreams, and challenging boundaries.

It highlights how art allows us to see the world through a magical lens, to bring life back to a sometimes somber world, and to foster a joyful and creative society.

The poem calls upon art teachers to remind individuals of their unwavering confidence, ignite and sustain their dreams, and to always believe in their extraordinary potential.

These projects and explorations in the module EDUC849  ‘Artists, Society and Arts Education’ provided me with insights into my role as an artist and educator in society. They reinforced the importance of using art as a vehicle for positive change, embracing diversity, challenging norms, and fostering inclusivity and self-expression. Through my artistic practice and engagement as an educator, I aim to inspire others, promote authenticity, and contribute to a vibrant and transformative society.
